Kenya strengthens AMR surveillance and evidence for action

WHO reports a national network of 32 surveillance sites across 27 counties and a transition to more detailed reporting.

In a feature published on 29 June 2026, WHO reported progress in Kenya’s antimicrobial resistance surveillance systems. The national network has grown from two model sites in 2017 to 32 sites across 27 counties and multiple One Health sectors.

Kenya transitioned to individual-level reporting through WHO’s Global Antimicrobial Resistance and Use Surveillance System in 2025. WHO reports that a central data warehouse brings together AMR surveillance, antimicrobial use and consumption data to support national analysis.

These developments support a clearer understanding of resistance patterns and strengthen the evidence available for treatment policy, prevention and stewardship.
